I think the general rule of thumb is that one should sit between three and four times the vertical height (not diagonal size) of the display ( this works for 4:3 and 16:9 displays). So for a 36" 4:3 TV the vertical height is about 21" and the optimum viewing distance would be between 63" and 84". Hope this helps
