no sound from tv

Why is it so hard for me to get stereo from my television? Components:
Adcom GTP550 PreAmp
Adcom GFA5400 Amp (bi-wired to 2 Castle Speakers. )
T.V. Magnavox 27 inch stereo tv with three outputs -- Monitor Out, Left(mono) & Right.
FWIW> The tv is connected to cable and a VCR.
I ran two cables from the Left/Right on the TV to the Video1 L/R on the pre-amp. No sound frm the speakers. I attached a single cable from monitor on the TV to the pre-amp monitor input, Nothing happened. I went thru the menu on the TV and selected external, VCR, DVD, EXT1, to which the TV went black, and I played a VCR tape. No sound from the speakers. As I said above, the cheesy VCR, has 2 audio in & out ports and 2 video in & out ports. The Audio Out port only will drive one speaker.
Any advice?
