I haven't heard the Sony so I don't know. It's likely quite good.The problem is that if you have an analogue only source or want to do a DAC upgrade or have a better DAC, then the lack of pass-thru is a big problem. Converting analogue to digital and back again is not good. If you had all digital sources, then the question is different.
