Newbie to HT, need some start up advice

I'm starting the process of looking into Surround sound/HT and would like a little help. I've currently got the standard, nothing fancy, stereo gear (Denon 777 amp - phono channels constantly being repaired, Beogram RX turntable, JVC DVD player, H-K tape deck and Klipsch KG2 speakers). I've looked at Best Buy and Circuit City and some local small shops. As you know, prices, equipment and performance are all over the place. With a total budget of $1,000 - $2,000 for amp and speakers, anyone have any ideas on some value in that price range?
