Never saw anything by him until Pickup on South Street last night. I imagine a lot of viewers allowing the anti-communist line to distract them from the film's real merits: the great, abrupt opening, the plotting and pacing, great performance from Thelma Ritter. Also a great "New York" film. The famous foot-chase in The French Connection I suspect was Pickup-inspired.
Follow Ups:
I like his first two features the best. "I Shot Jesse James" and "The Baron of Arizona".
