"Brideshead", plus "I Claudius", "Jewel in the Crown", and "Tinker Tailor, Soldier Spy" prove that television CAN be made into something great- if only for a few hours at a time!

Waugh claimed that Brideshead was a kind of confection he pulled off while pining for a square meal during WWII, and indeed, the book is a little starchy, but the Geoffery Burgon Granada version is astounding.

Every part in Brideshead seems to have found a perfect actor.
