I watched this for the first time over the weekend. The irony here---when this was made, it was a contemporary and boldly ironic statement about the birth of the nuclear era and the Cold War---but now, it seems to paint a slightly different picture. I couldn't help but see it as a strange time capsule of American fear and panic circa 1950 (which stretched into the 80s)---when we didn't know then what we know now.
Follow Ups:
That and Dr. Strangelove are two favorites of mine... of course, growing up near ground zero (SAC), even in 2nd grade I knew those duck and cover drills were pointless.
Pam,
I watched 'Atomic Cafe' about a year ago per your recommendation.
Have seen it couple times since. A roller coaster ride! I was
especially disturbed about those army atomic human guinea-pig experiments.
Like you, I grew up beside a military installation, a large logistics base with a SAC B-52 Wing. Are you familiar with HAARP? If not, do
a web search, you may find that interesting. ~AH
