At some point his wife ( played so intensively by Miles ) thinks he may be culprit, that make him even more alone, and that is finely ciseled by Fonda.
Not entirely agreeing with the police, Hitch is even better than that! Remember the scene in the courtoom where the attorney citing the police deposition about things that he never told in this context?
Suddendly a "correct " police look more like Kafka and " Der Prozess "....
