Most films have a dual-narrative structure. There is a personal story and a worldly story, and both get resolved together, satiating the audience on a worldly and personal level. A classic example would be boy-meets-girl, war tears them apart, and as the war ends, the boy and girl reunite. The quiet american is a particulary interesting recent example ... but to say more would ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it.
