I would agree that there's nothing funny about neocons - they usually seem to be particularly lacking in humour and irony.Knowing a little bit about Peter Jackson et al, I feel safe in asserting that the filmmaking team was not promoting a right wing agenda in the LOTR. (Vigo Motensen was at some pains to point this as well.) As Kiwis of a slightly liberal bent, they're not interested furthering US political agendas. They are keen on fantasy films, however. And capitalism.
Besides - this thing is really, I mean REALLY, old news, hashed over ages ago. If you want to get indignant about cultural events fueling public acceptance of neocon propaganda, get indignant over network news, CNN, Fox, PBS and all the other news "journalism" that gave this administration a free pass.
To hear Noam Chomsky's own words on neocons, American imperialism and the Bush administration, I sugest you check out the documentary film "Hijacking Catastrophe", now playing in a very few cities across the USA. (If only this film had gotten the attention and distribution of Farenheit 9/11.)
Last week's New Yorker is also a good read, especially Nicholas Lehmann's piece on GWB, "Remember The Alamo".

I was joking by the way. My humor tends to be so dry people don't realize it's humor.I heard some of this "Chomsky/Zinn" LOTR discussion dramatized on the radio last weekend and I thought it was some of the funniest stuff I'd ever heard. From the very beginning, the thought that these 2 guys are so deeply knowledgeable about every detail of Middle Earth...
The people who did this also did a right-wing commentary by Anne Coulter and somebody else on the movie Aliens, where they get into a discussion of the ethics of abortion if someone is impregnated by an alien lifeform. I don't know if this is on the web or not.
Good one, then. When this came out 3 years ago, there were hundreds of people on various forums who took it seriously. Quite a flurry of righteous outrage.
You were so late to the party I wasn't sure if you "got it" or not. Apologies - I shoulda known better. The political climate being what it is these days (I do some work in that sector), I'm not always able to guage the correct temperature. I've had weeks and weeks of people being shrill - in my face.
A young neocon told me last week that as a political "moderate", I was "beneath contempt". Sure is a strange world.
Sorry for being sensitive.
