Long time jazz fan Clint Eastwood assembled this colledtion of Monk interviews, performances, and comments by other musicians. A large portion of the footage was taken from a 1968 German TV documentary featuring the Monk Quartet of the time on a European tour. This is a wonderful introduction to the genius of Monk, the first great avant guard jazz player and composer. There is a companion CD and LP as well. Monk died in 1982, not having performed in public for ten uears.
Follow Ups:
a very sympathetic documentary on Monk; I saw this at a film festival when this was 1st released in the mid 80's and the audience applauded at the end; that was the only film in that season that happened with
Art Pepper; "Portrait of a Jazz Survivor" you might find entertaining if you liked "Straight, NC"
Very few documentaries out there with a Jazz theme as good as these two.
"Let's Get Lost", the one on Chet Baker, is at this level. So Is "A Great Day in Harlem", about the making of the famous Art Kane photograph of all those jazz musicians on a brownstone entryway.
