Kenneth Turan of the LA Times has a book out called "Not Coming to A Theater Near You."
Spirited Away, Ronin...fairly well-known here, yeah, but how about a Russian film about Stalin-era musicals (Huh, Vic, huh?), called East Side Story.
Probably worth at least a glance at the library or Noble Barns.
Follow Ups:
...like Proof, Heavenly Creatures, and Dry Cleaning. I was surprised to see the likes of High Fidelity, Spirited Away and (yer kiddin', right?) The Third Man mentioned - geez, these are hardly obscure films. But I guess they're terra incognita to more than a few of the mutiplex generation.A sobering thought.
I'll probably brouse this book at B&N whilst sipping my frappuccino.
BTW, I have heard of, but never seen, East Side Story. Does Netflix have it?
