The full title is "A Personal Journey with Martin Scorcese Through Americasn Film". It is a very idiiosyncratic tour through American movie history from a director's point of view. He highlights many
unheard of or under-rated directors and some really obscure films as well as some biggies. He jumps around in time and organizes his themes around groupings like "The Director as Rebel", etc. It is a very personal journey and each time I see it I learn a lot and make a mental note to see one or more of the films. Naturally all the clips are shown in the correct aspect ratio, not so in the companion book. At one point Scorcese observes, "We are all children of Griffiths and Kubrick".
Follow Ups:
I'm with you, Rico, I love this 2 vhs set and the book.My favorite part is "The Director as Smuggler"...as a fan of film noir, this is essential stuff.
Marty has a unique vision in viewing/reviewing these films, and in his own film making...I look forward to his Howard Hughes epic THE AVIATOR coming soon...I just wish he would have cast virtually ANYBODY else than DiCaprio as Hughes.
Have a good w/e,
