The first one is called Seaside (Bord de mer). A slow and insightful French film that is really just a study of humans, their problems and the way they deal with them.Slow and deliberate, it is not for everyone, but if such films do not turn you away, give it a chance. It is good, and you will likely get absorbed into it and its characters. We certainly were. Some wonderful performances and observations, great cinematography and as result a film that will linger in your mind for some time.
As one viewer from Seattle put it: "a boring movie about boring people in a boring town"
That should be strong enough recommendation in itself. :-)
The second - the Russian film Tycoon... for something completely different, for relentless push ans shove, chicanery and pride, loyalty and all other deadly sins all in one package that is bound to keep you riveted. Yes, you probably have seen it all before, but the overal package is fantastic, and some actors are simply quite good.
There is just enough brutal action mixed with intrigue and small amount of sex to make the result about right.
Follow Ups:
I watched one of your earlier recommendations, Louder than Bombs. Unfortunately the DVD looked and sounded appallingly poor (worse than a mediocre videotape) to the point of being distracting. I thought the film was all right, a little too ordinary for my tastes and didn't quite give me the emotional punch that these type of films sometimes do. (I admit to liking movies for a taste of fantasy and glamor.) Nevertheless, I'll look out for these new titles you recommend.
"HO, HO, HO!" - Santa Claus
I hope you like them. The Seaside, as I said, is definitely not for everybody. It is a movie for those of us who love to sit at the small table in the sidewalk cafe and watch people - how they are dressed, the way they present themselves through their cloth, jestures and body language, how they interact with others and react to the world around them. I had spent many hours doing this. There are quite a few characters in that film and of course they are all given limited time, but amazingly, enough time to get you started on character studies.
Also appreciated was the fact that answers were not really given to you, so there was plenty of room left for your imagination.
And the Tycoon is just a great fun in a nice package, so easy to enoy.
