Watched "Love Me Tender" other nite. Surprised at Big E's acting
debut, fairly good. Agree with Maltin on overall film quality, about
2&1/2 stars out of four. E died in that film. His ghost performed
the title song as cast of main characters strolled off across a
field from the cemetery where last rites for E were performed. ~AH
Follow Ups:
It's easilly the best of a bad lot; the only other Elvis films that get 1 1/2 stars out of 4 from me are Blue Hawaii and Jailhouse Rock
Clambake, Roustabout, etc. are embarassments without any of the charm of say, an Annette Funicello film, where she kicks serious sand.... (am I showing my age here?)
As A huge Elvis fan, he does have some good films: Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, Kid Gallahad, his last, Change of Habit, and his favorite, King Creole. His co-star in that film was Walter Matthau, who commented that Elvis was a very good actor. The beginning of the end was Blue Hawaii. After that film, they merely became like processed food. Elvis commented that he became physically sick lookking at the scripts knowing that his name and time would be attached to the picture. The problem was that his Tom Parker, his "brilliant" manager, signed him to a 25+ picture deal soon after he was signed to R.C.A., which locked him into being the cash cow that the movie industry found him to be.I think that you could tell how much he liked the film by how he acted. If you have seen Stay Away Joe, which is probably the worst movie I have ever seen, then you know what I mean.
