I found his on-camera, folksy southern ways phony and tiresome. His books are great, however, if somewhat long-winded. I could not watch the entire series, btw, perhaps because I've been studying the Civil War all my life and for me it was nearly all a rehash. If you want a good look at the Civil War watch the film Glory. Normally I am a harsh critic of historical movies but find this one superbly done and very moving. And accurate in its story line, though of course most of the individuals were fictional other than Shaw and the generals portrayed. Yes, they actually charged up the beach against that Confederate fort. One of the commanding generals who talks to Shaw just before the attack was also killed, but I forget his name. The film had it right.
Unfortunately, the remains of that fort have now been mostly washed away by the waters of Charleston harbor.
Get ready for an overdose of Shelby Foote.
