He needed the taxi driver because the driver knew his way around L.A. and the fastest routes. Later on he does try to kill Foxx but it is unknown as to whether that was his plan all along.

  It was alluded to, earlier in the flick, that a cabbie had been murdered in Oakland. I forget the dialogue, but one came away from that discussion knowing that it was a similar setup and Cruise was the one who had done Oakland as well. It definitely added to the suspense knowing that he was gonna use Foxx up and then off him.
  Dammn all this discussion is gonna force me to buy this. Helluva movie IMHO
