I recently saw Pasolini's "Gospel According to St. Matthew." Imagine this film being made by an atheist who (wrongly) believed that the gospels would degenerate into incomprehensibility over time. Nevertheless it was a compelling, beautifully photographed film with many unforgettable scenes. Cast exclusively by local residents as well, which created a realistic ambience. Defintely a filmmaker who defies categorization.

I also saw Salo once (which was enough). Very difficult to sit through but also a rather prescient and accurate synopsis of humanity's state of nature when God is filtered out of the equation entirely. We can see our own culture's obsession with sex and gratification increasing exponentially with the expungement of "morality."
