Anyone here familiar with his work? For such a well-known and regarded documentarian, it's surprising to me that his stuff isn't available on DVD or even video, it seems. Anyway, I'd only read about him until last night, when I saw his 1968 documentary High School. Great moments. Very well observed. And, what probably comes as no surprise, American public education sucked back then as well.I bet you guys didn't know that the dictionary is the only place where success comes before work.
Anyway, some of you might remember his getting a lot of positive press for his Domestic Violence a couple years ago.
Follow Ups:
That doc, about a MA asylum, was banned for 20 years. I was lucky enough to see it in 1972 at a festival. For such a compelling and influential filmmaker, Wiseman still doesn;t get a lot of press, even in this current"golden age of documentaries". Most of his work was done for PBS.
Festivals or random screenings seem to be the only opportunity. Sorry I missed Domestic Violence. At least I live in NY....
