This film walks the line between melodrama and drama. Actually, it weaves along, stumbling from one to the other.

A better actor than the obiquitous Greg Kinnear would have helped a bit but not much.
I guess I'd recommend it for entertainment purposes. It is a hell of a lot better than any sitcom, for comparions' sake.

I saw the trailer yesterday and hoped it woud be as funny as you have said.
I am not the most family oriented of people (Addams' Family Values apart) but thought it looked worthwhile.
all the popular sillinesses, i.e. abhorence of recreational drugs, worship of some physical perfection none really attain, ridiculousness of "feel good positivism," etc.
Like I said, it is entertaining.
