A black and white Cannes winner that takes an unsuspecting young man to the belly of an insanely dark work of criminals and gamblers. Our unsuspecting protagonist opportunistically seizes a letter addressed to a home where he is doing roof work. The addressee suddenly overdoses and Sebastien finds instructions and a train ticket within the letter hoping it will lead to better fortunes. What he gets himself into is a totally extraordinary set of circumstances that nearly costs him his life. This film is compelling even though it is somewhat telegraphic. You know what is coming but you are compelled to see how it is protrayed.
There is an interview in the bonus features that may or may not be real. Interesting for sure but one would have to judge it carefully.
Follow Ups:
So is this one of those films where, as when Richard Harris recites/sings MacArthur Park, you have to try and work out what is real and what is something else?
I love those things an this sounds right up my... alley.
