Rio and his sister flee from their uncle after killing there dad for his drunken violence. They start a long journey to a safe-harbor friend of their mother's and make the accidental acquaintance of Billy the Kid (DeHaan). After a big shoot out with Pat Garrett (Hawke), they ride along with the now captured Billy and Sheriff Pat. Along the way, Rio develops a boy-crush on Billy and begins to do things to help him escape. Bringing Billy to justice is quite a chore that requires lots of burned ammo and falling bodies. Near the end, the vengeance-driven uncle (Pratt) has finally found Rio and Sara and wants to mete out some family justice. More lead flies.
This is a modern take on the old-style Western that most will enjoy. The story and script are very good and Hawke plays a somewhat ruthless, "nothing counts but the law" kind of Sheriff. DeHaan plays a wiser, more sophisticated and likable Billy who happens to be bottled-up crazy. Never mind that Real Billy was a twenty-one-year-old punk who deserved shooting. Finally, Pratt is the psycho brother that has one thing on his mind, getting even. (I find he's a tad out of his comfort zone playing this kind of character. YMMV.)
3 out of 5 wonks for cast, acting, story, realism
1.5 of 5 wanks for some dragging it out
