Shifting gears, eh? This was a cute film with laughs and gags. No, it's not Nickelodeon but way more mature. People get killed, right?
Billy Batson, problematic foster home reject, finally gets a foster home with unusual parents. There he meets Freddy and the two begin the slow, agonizing ritual of becoming friends. Soon after, the Wizard (Hounsu) recruits Billy because of his honest soul. (Housou came deliciously close to over-performing this one.) Billy's mission is to keep the Seven Deadly Sins imprisoned so as not to plague the world. Simple enough. Except the always great Mark Strong appears as Dr. Sivana who has acquired the powers of the 7-deadly and wants to combine Shazam's power.
Much chaos ensues and Billy realizes the power of the Wizard's staff and turns his foster household kids into Shazamees.
Jack Dylan Grazer played one of the best smartasses I've seen in decades. His voice drips with sarcasm. Zachary Levi, full-bodied Shazam, was also excellent as the man-child superhero who has trouble figuring things out.
3.5 wonks for casting and script
1 wank for not knowing if it was for kids or grown-ups
