master, Edward Yang.
Based on a true story of murder: a high school student from an immigrant family, fleeing the Communist regime in mainland China, descends into the gangland culture of Taipei.
This is a maddeningly brilliant film that actually has several simultaneous story lines: the student's adolescent awakening and disturbance and that of his father who attempts to integrate himself into the very different work environment of a "foreign" country.
This is a violent, disturbing film because we care about the characters: these aren't faceless, 2-dimensional characters. Unlike many films, this film builds to a climax that, in this case, is perfectly described as "shattering."
I paid a few bucks for it and so should you...
A must-see!
