Surely it would be a less entertaining movie if the bugs weren't down here on earth menacing mankind. Think of how far less entertaining it would have been if Godzilla fought Mecha-Godzilla on the moon rather than stomping all over buildings in Tokyo.

OK, so it wasn't really all that entertaining in the first place, but far less so than it would have been on the moon.
