I think casting is a little more complex than just hiring whoever you can afford.
As you know , often the first choices for roles are unavailable, so I just watch what is on the screen. I had no issue with performances, I think they both conveyed the personality motivating the action well enough to get the job done.
During a question and answer , one actor , with enough yank to pick his roles, described how he took an astronaut role he wasn't interested in, and on a minor film that normally wouldn't cast him, just so he could work in the directors next movie, a musical called, La La land.
curious thing for me was I enjoyed the astronaut movie, and avoided La La Land like a disease, other than checking out a few scenes when it hit cable.
