It just doesn't make sense that Mel would show up at the very end unarmed with no way to ensure the Byrdes were turned in after he got his hands on some evidence. No smart cop would do that so that part just wasn't believable. I realize it was all set up so that the Byrdes would ultimately win, albeit with yet another consequence.

Yeah, I see your point, but then, he knew the Byrdes weren't the trigger happy type, right. No guns.
