Cabaret is indeed a great musical and was also a turning point for me. As a child, the musicals I knew were Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. So as I got older, I thought musicals were cheesy and sort of silly. A friend of mine recommended Cabaret and said, yes it's a musical but it's different. Indeed it opened my eyes to a musical where music and dancing were tightly integrated into a serious adult story. Later I learned about Bob Fosse and came to appreciate his choreography as part of the winning formula. I came to appreciate musicals from their golden age and also the modern ones that show up once in a while, like last year's Cyrano.
