Robert Carlyle turns in a sterling performance of a small-time hood going for the "big score". For once, he does not play the bulging-eyed, nearly out of control loonie that has become his signature. He performance is balanced and well nuanced. A delightful surprise.
Carlyle is joined by four other gang members who embark on the "big heist" that turns out to be "not so big" afterall. Then, in one night, each members' hidden money disappears leading to much suspicion and in-fighting to find who took what and where.
Ray Winstone puts in his usual yeoman performance as a gang member. His local accent and vernacular almost merited subtitles as I missed some of his lines. Lena Headey played Carlyle's squeeze who becomes fed up with his inability to leave the criminal life alone. And, the rest of the gang is comprised of a violent loonie, a half-wit loonie, and a young, impetuous loonie.
Worth a watch.
