I bought this DVD to replace my laserdisc copy and it is a lot better: remastered picture and dolby Digital 5.1 sound. This is Eastwood's first big league film and he is given precious little to say. The plot is outlandish and I still cringe at the use of a helicpopter (a mdern one at that) in a WW II movie. The second half is almost entirely action sequences, some pretty wel done. Overall, however, nowhere near as good as "Guns of Navarone" by the samer author.
Follow Ups:
WED is successful when you don't take it too seriously. I like it as kind of a "Raider of the Lost Ark"-type action fantasy. Speilberg counts it among his favorite movies and it no doubt had an influence on him when he was producing Raiders.
There's only one problem with the DVD for me. Unlike the Laserdisc, the DVD does not have the intermission.
Agreed but the remastered picture and 5.1 sound more than make up for this (at least for me).
