I agree that Gibson blew a rare opportunity to explore Mayan culture. I think, though, that you're too sympathetic toward the Mayans, a society centered on institutional brutality and violence towards its own, perhaps like none the world has ever seen. Gibson didn't even scratch the surface. Their math and science dead-ended in their religion. But they did give us peppers, corn, and cocoa. Too bad Mel squandered an exceptional title on what amounted to a mediocre chase movie.
When you're circling the drain, it doesn't really matter whether you're spinning to the left or the right.

If Mel ever glorifies life the way he glorifies death, it would be a miracle. I wasn't expecting a romanticization of the Mayan civilization but come on. Give me something besides running for your life and heads rolling.
