Dame Joan Plowright and young Rupert Friend have great chemistry and shine in this tale of an unusual May/December Platonic friendship. Plowright is a lonely widow, distant from her daughter and grandson, who comes to live in a tired boarding hotel full of folks (mainly widows as well) her own age, all played by the creme de le creme of London stage and screen actors. She has a mishap in front of a flat rented by a young writer, who assists her and befriends her. They begin a friendship and she passes him off to the hotel staff and guests as her grandson. Then the real agrandson...well, I won't spoil the fun.
The fim is based on a 70's novel by writer Elizabeth Taylor and is full of wisdom and gentle humor along with moving insights into human behavior. My highest recommendation for this one!
