A shy and earnest young man is driven to madness and suicide by the banal malevolence of his neighbors in a '70's Paris apartment house.

A study of the horrific consequences which can result when a prevailing, indifferent selfishness inherent in the "group" (powerful) is directed against the "individual" (vulnerable). Absurdly hilarious in many respects of characters and situations.

There is a momentarily disconcerting mix of actors in this thoroughly French film: Melvyn Douglas, Jo Van Fleet, Shelly Winters, LIla Kedrova, Roman Polanski........This works itself out.

Although he does not achieve the most seamless depiction of the mental deterioration of his character, director Polanski handily succeeds in presenting a richly surreal social puzzle that stands well with his stronger works.

I found it an interesting look at European life but nearly undecipherable at that point in time. Polanski has always had an excellent eye for art direction, locations, and cinematography. (Ninth Gate, I think, is his peak art direction.) I recently picked up the dvd and had forgotten about Adjani and Winters.
