I know that this was mentioned previously but it just came to Tucson Friday and I finally got a chance to see it. It did not disappoint.
It is set in Ireland where a street musician is playing heartfelt songs but is crippled by heartbreak meets a Czech immigrant with her own tale and music. They heal each other and circle around falling in love (?) but the two of them make a larger whole. The music develops (and great music it is) and pushes the man (names are never known) to get to a studio. This is an indie film with a very low budget but lets the people and music soar. There is one scene with the girl, having had to buy batteries for a portable cd player, is working out the lyrics to the man's song and is walking and singing along to the song in real time which is just magical.
Highly recommnended.
Follow Ups:
Few films convey the joy of music (and music making) as well as this film.
I saw it at BIFF last month and loved it.
Horribly I went to the advance screening and if I had waited and gone to the regular show I would have been treated to Glen Hansard singing those songs at the drinks thing afterwards.
Damn!
I cannot think of who would not enjoy this film.
... having already recorded The Swell Sessions album together, became a couple during the making of this film adding to that electricity between them.
I must get the Swell Session disc.
