Watched this enjoyable western with Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Greg
Peck, Lionel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, et.al. recently, however, found
emotionally-jerky ending to be something of a strain. ~AH

I agree. Martin Scorcese loves this one and features it in his documentary film and book on American films.
