The rubber plantation, though interesting, showed Willard to be GI scum like everyone else and not some "special guy" on a special mission.

For me it was as though the playmate scene was some weird trip in a giant outhouse -- mud, rain and no way home on acid -- apocalyptic reality of persons completely at the end of the road with no means available?

Concur completely about the plantation/(French history-lesson) scenes.
