This is the granddaddy of all the many films about addiction. Ray Milland stars as a would be writer consumed by alcohol and his adventures with the bottle over a four day weekend while his brother and girlfriend try to help him. Billy Wilder shared the writing credit and directed. The film won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1945 as well as three other Oscars for Screenwriting, Acting (Milland) and Direction. Also there were three more nominations. Jane Wyman plays the long suffering girlfriend. To research his part Milland spent a night at the dry out ward of Bellvue Hospital. Harrowing, even by today's standards.
