Classics for the ages - one needs time to assesss that.
But I can provide a list of very good films - at least IMO - made in the last 5-10-15 years that *I* think are worth preserving.
Let me get back to you.
Follow Ups:
as a matter of routine not speaking of older "Classics" which have been digitized for preservation. So say within the past 10 years outside maybe 5 or 6 years is more what I had in mind when I posted that. Not that I have seen every film made in the past ten years which is why I asked in such a provocative manner.
It's discouraging to read in that article that my DVD collection will be compromised within 15 years. Sheesh.
Since several of the movies below are foreign and/or independent, it's unlikely anyone will be spending megabucks to preserve them. Most titles on this list were shot on film but more than a few have digital elements. This is by no means a complete list - just some of my favorites of the last ten years - since I haven't seen everything either. It's getting harder and harder to get foreign releases booked in the Midwest.
I must also sadly note that three of the most briliant filmmakers represented here, Brad McGann (In My Father's Den"), Fabien Bielinsky (The Aura), and Edward Yang (Yi Yi) all died in the past two years - McGann and Bielinsky were just starting their careers as driectors so theirs is an especially tragic loss.
My (very personal) list:
The Return
Children of Men
Pan's Labyrinth
In My Father's Den
The Aura
The Devil's Backbone
No Man's Land
Welcome To Sarajevo
Master & Commander: Far Side Of The World
Topsy-Turvy
Vera Drake
The Death Of Mr. Lazarescu
Gods & Monsters
24 Hour Party People
Control
Mulholland Drive
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Spring, Summer, Fall Winter...and Spring
Yi Yi
Lone Star
Men With Guns
Kitchen Stories
High Fidelity
Dirty Pretty Things
Bloody Sunday
The Lives Of Others
Forty Shades Of Blue
Last Orders
Inside Man
When The Levees Broke: A Requiem In Four Acts
Amores Perros
The Beat That My Heart Skipped
The Piano Teacher
L'enfant
Tristam Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story
A Mighty Wind
Best In Show
Gosford Park
From 2007:
Away From Her
This Is England
The Diving Bell & The Butterfly
Atonement
A Mighty Heart
Death At A Funeral (Minor movie, but funnier than hell.)
Ratatouille
Lake Of Fire
White Light/Black Rain
No End In Sight
In The Shadow Of The Moon
(Still many '07 releases yet to see.)
Control is from '07 as well but I left it up top since it makes a perfect double bill with 24 Hour Party People.
Animation for all:
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Persepolis (2007 - just saw a sneak WOW!)
The Incredibles
The Iron Giant
The Triplettes of Bellville
I'm sure I've left some out but surely there's somehting in there for you to get from Netflix. I think we're in a golden age of documentaries so those deserve their very own post.
