a beautiful looking and sounding film. Simple, earthy and pure - a pleasure to view and experience. Not the last word in moviemaking but if you want to relax and soak it in I think you will like it.
The story starts with their grandson deciding weather to sell the farm or not. Then there is a flashback to explain. Sweetland is a story of Inga who moves to the states in the early 1900s to marry Olaf in Minnesota. But there are problems with Inga's papers and heritage, she is german by descent, though she is pure of heart and intent the local minister will not marry them. How can they live together and survive without being married? This is the story we watch, no further explaination is really needed. They endure and survive despite disapproving looks and comments. They persevere in their own manner, and their story is told.
I hope I conveyed the essence of this simple film and you take the time to watch. with John Heard, Ned Beatty, Alan Cummings, Tim Gurney and Elizabeth Reaser.
Follow Ups:
about 1/10th of the movie is spoken in Dutch and German WITHOUT subtitles
It gives an interesting quality - you can relate to the people in the film because often they do not understand each other.
