Clears things a bit,yeah.I did know that before a certain time in the 50s all movies were standard aspect ratio.Couldn't remember exactly when wid scren debuted.
I do know that the guy that ran Columbia pictures,which produced Earth Stood Stll,was a notorious tightwad.Harry Cohn,was it? Thought maybe that's why it's not in color,even if it give the film a film noirish look.You can see it was done cheaply.I keep laughing about the breathing/sight holes under Gort's chin.Guess nobody wanted to re-shoot so they'd stay within budget.
