...if not THE best film of the year.
I like Schnabel for better as a filmmaker than as a painter/sculptor/collagist.
Follow Ups:
about not being as enamored with Schnabel as a painter/sculptor/collagist because for me the weakest parts of the movie were Schnabel's artistic interpretations of Bauby's internal/imaginative world. The imagery just didn't resonate very strongly with me. It didn't take me out of the movie or negatively effect the overall emotional impact but there was a noticeable drop-off of involvement in those moments.
That said I appreciated what he was trying to do.
"You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when he hates all the same people you do."
I feel Schnabel is more effective using film than any other media...so far. I thought segmnent of the movie depicing Bauby's internal world and states of mind were superb.
SCnabel, BTTW, was/is a hugely successful artist.
