Ichikawa was best known in the West for his two (anti)war films -- Burmese Harp and Fires on the Plain(both recently released by Criterion) and his documentary about the 1964 Tokyo Olympics - Tokyo Olympiad.
Most of my favorite Ichikawa films, however, are his black comedies from the 1950s, such as A Crowded Streetcar and The Billionaire.
Rest in Peace.
