I'd say you misunderstood Jett's "pacing" reaction.
Look at it again, how he's treated and what this means.
Recall the scene on the porch when he "surprises" Rock's character.
His alcoholism also is in line with the character Dean creates.

at least I don't think I did.

I just felt like he took it a little bit too far which enabled me to see the acting and therefore lessened the impact of it.
