Cold Mountain was sunk by the too old Nicole, who was... too cold for the role, as well.

...but it was overwrought. There were moments of brilliance...adding up to less than the sum of its parts.
Cold Mountain had real potential but I agree with you 100% Kidman was totally miscast. With her in the lead CM never had a chance. Didn't care for Renee Zellweger in it either, though I'm apparently in the minority there.
TMD was wonderful and I adored Rickman in it. He doesn't often get the chance to show off those kinds of skills oncreen.
like Rickman, Malkovich, and Spacey don't get enough "meaty" film roles.
I'd also mention I think it's a tragedy of truly immense proportions that DeNiro, Pacino, and Nicholson have spent the past decade and a half sleep-walking through films.
Why don't these guys try and work with quality directors?
"Heat" was the last time two of our three greatest film stars/actors did good work and those weren't exactly very deep, challenging characters.
