Saw both of these today, and enjoyed both, but I can well imagine that SW will do better business than TGC.
TGC takes a complex(ish) children's book and does its best to avoid over-simplification, but in doing so becomes almost never ending exposition. The actors do well with the small amount of breathing room they are given, but it is difficult to commit emotionally to characters that you don't get time to empathise with.
SW in contrast takes a simple plot-line, but gives the audience, and the actors, space in which to grow together. Nice to see Joan Plowright in what may be her swan-song. A simple, pleasant, well made and emotionally satisfying film.
