The third in the 'spanish civil war' triology after Devil's backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, to be released next year.
With the Orphanage, there's a definate spanish 'school' established here.
del Toro finances his own films and produces talented young spanish film makers by doing things like Hellboy & The Hobbit.
Follow Ups:
GDT is a fan of this stuff as well as someone who makes deeper, darker, more personal films - he doesn't necessarily consider that he's slumming when he makes Hellboy II or The Hobbit. He's a geek and an artist. he originally was set to collaborate with Jackson on films versions of Halo. OTOH I imagine his contract for TH will make it much easier for him to finance his independent films - it will certainly give him more clout with studios. (He has a current first look deal with Universal who I'm sure are not thrilled he's running off to NZ for 4 years to make to bloclbusters for NL/WB.)
I'm actually not sure of the status on 3993 but it's written by the screenwriter of The Orphanage.
GDT also has close ties with the other two "Three Amigos", Alphonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Cuaron was a producer on Pan.
..I wasn't implying he was slumming by doing Hollywood - Hellboy was a fine movie, IMHO. In fact, I think it's very astute of him...;0)
