.... must be fairly lazy. We love Disney (not all). But we also love Red Balloon which I agree is simple, beautiful and universal. I love the opening sequence where the boy strokes the cat at the top of the stairs, it is so natural. Unfortunately the dvd is not readily available in UK and I had to purchase from China via ebay.
I have 'Zazie...' in my collection (a Louis Malle boxset) which I have yet to watch although I'm keen to see soon based on your recommendation.
I don't think all of Disney is cursed and although I agree it can be formulaic, they backed David Lynch's 'Straight Story' which is one of my favourite modern films (perhaps not for kids though) from a maverick director.
