A couple weeks ago, someone brought up Cool Hand Luke, which came out within five years of Chinatown. But whereas CHL seems somewhat stuck in its time and flawed in many respects, Chinatown has always seemed timeless and flawless. Both the writing and acting are in another league and it's dark and haunting in a way CHL only tries to be.

Follow Ups:
had a lot to do with it, too.
Newman is VERY old-fashioned in his acting style. Actually, he set new standards for hamming it up. You know, that cutesie grin, repeated endlessly in so many films but reaching maximum exposure in this one.
CHL is a treasure trove of cliches.
