What I really admired about Carlin was his courage. Long before political correctness muzzled the English-speaking world, Carlin was breaking down conventions.
He had considerable mastery of the English language. Kind of a blue collar William Safire. His routines weren't just clever, they often displayed insight.
His powers of observation were extraordinary. He was especially sensitive at detecting hypocrisy.
