The film was based on the novel of the same name, and the novel was based on the true story of Harry Powers of West Virginia. He was hanged in 1932. I don't find info on an earlier version, but that doesn't mean it can't exist.

Thanks for that info. Since the plot was from a book published in the early 30s, I think it likely it was an earlier version of Night of the Hunter. The similarities couldn't be coincidence, I wouldn't think. There are a lot of B movies of that era that are now totally forgotten, but it did make it to TV at some point. At the time, I hadn't even heard of the later Night of the Hunter. This other version, I'd guess, was made around 1940. It made an impression on me. It had some fascinating scenes.I see now the book wasn't published until the 1950s. I am baffled.
